In the depths of winter it is obvious when your heating isn't working at all, but it may be more difficult to pinpoint whether it is working to its optimum or just hanging in there. Gas heating in particular needs to be working properly to be safe, and even electric heaters can be dangerous if not maintained and checked from time to time. So what do you look for?
Does your heating system work efficiently?
Checking whether your heating system works efficiently is vital for all households. Fire danger is one potentially serious result from portable electric heater malfunction, but even a small problem in gas heating can fill your room with dangerous carbon monoxide, or can cause a fire. Gas flames that are inefficient don't burn off the gas properly, creating potential for blowouts and carbon monoxide leakage.
Testing your heating system
When testing whether your heating system works efficiently and is safe, look for these things.
- Gas heaters should have a blue flame, not a yellow or orange one. The latter means that it is not burning efficiently, which can not only be dangerous but also means that it isn't heating properly
- Gas heaters should also regularly be checked for leaks, preferably by a professional gas service person
- If you need to light a gas heater, light the match before the gas, to avoid dangerous gas build ups
- Any broken parts on any type of heater, particularly guards, grills or switches, should be repaired or replaced immediately
- If your electric heaters seem to be creating less heat than previously, check that all the elements are functioning. An inexpensive heater will probably be more cost effective to replace than repair in this instance
- Check the settings on your heater, particularly if you use a remote to turn on a reverse cycle heater / cooler. If it feels cool, check that it is on the right heat setting, that the thermostat is on an acceptable temperature, and that the swing function is on to distribute heat
- Ensure that your house is well insulated and that you have heavy curtains and well sealed doors and windows to make the most of your heating. An apparently inefficient heating system could in reality be a great heater blowing heat essentially outdoors
The importance of checking your heating system is clear. If you are in doubt, a visit from a professional service person may save you more than the cost of the visit in gas or electricity bills.
Heating System: Other information
Regular checking of your heating system is important both to ensure that it is working efficiently and that it is safe. Gas and electric heating systems can be unsafe and ineffective if not working optimally. Just as important, though, is to ensure that your home is adequately sealed and insulated against the biting winter cold, to give your heaters the best chance to keep your home at a comfortable temperature.
