High pressure drain cleaning is an efficient and cost-effective way to remove major blockages from drains without the need to dig up pipes. Coming in hose lengths of up to 60 metres, these high pressure "water jetters" can make fast work of big trouble in your pipes.
Drain cleaning: Tools
The two main high pressure tools used for clearing drains are the water jetter - otherwise known as a water blaster - or an electric eel. The water jetter blasts water into the pipes, removing anything from tree roots to corrosion. It's probably the most effective tool because it's just as good at 50 metres down the pipe as it is at the opening, and can be easily inserted into toilet basins or vents for easy access. They typically operate with pressures between 1200-4000 psi, with heavy industrial units having a psi up to 40000.
An Electric eel, also known as a plumber's snake, is a steel cable that has a cutter on the end. It's great for chewing through large tree roots, but will leave debris in the line - something the jetter won't do. The Electric Eel also loses power the further down the line you go.
Water jetter: Pros and cons
One of the most common reasons for using a water jetter is economics. Typically, it will cost anywhere between $1700 for a 1350psi unit, or up to $4000 for a 3000psi machine. This solution might be ideal for people who have regular problems with tree roots but can't have trees removed. It certainly would save a lot of money and time if the pipes need to be dug up as an alternative.
However, some professionals advise that using a water jetter for a long period of time could be problematic for the drain's seals. If you are unsure, a plumber can place a camera down the line to see what the problem is. This will also tell you how far down the line the blockage actually is, as a water jetter might not even reach.
For one off uses, water jetters can be hired from machinery hire outlets, or your local plumber may also have a unit. It's definitely worth looking into if you do have a major blockage, because it could save you thousand in pipe excavation costs alone.
